The Shahid Kapoor-starrer Jersey (2022) made a poor opening on its first day in theatres. The sports drama, a remake of the hit 2019 Telugu film of the same name, managed to collect only Rs3.75 crore nett, according to trade website BoxOfficeIndia.com.
Also starring Mrunal Thakur and Pankaj Kapur, the film, according to trade sources, was made on a budget of around Rs80 crore. Given the poor opening, and with films like Runway 34 (2022) and Heropanti 2 (2022) lined up for release next week, Jersey faces an uphill battle to break even. The movie will need a massive jump today and tomorrow to get anywhere close to that number.
But the dream run of the Yash-starrer KGF: Chapter 2 (2022) has made Jersey's task even more difficult. On its second Friday in cinemas, the Hindi version of the Kannada film minted Rs11.25 crore nett, taking its total box office collection to Rs 275 crore nett. The Hindi version is now on course to hit the Rs300 crore mark by the end of its second weekend.
KGF: Chapter 2 (Hindi) has also become the highest-grossing Hindi film of this year, leaving behind SS Rajamouli's action drama RRR (2022) and Vivek Agnihotri's The Kashmir Files (2022), which have amassed Rs255.87 crore and Rs242.39 crore nett, respectively.
