The Mammootty-starrer CBI 5: The Brain, the much-awaited fifth instalment of the iconic CBI series, has already caught the attention of cine-goers and Mammukka fans as it marks his return as the sly detective Sethurama Iyer.
The latest 2 minute 23 second trailer for the film, which has a heavy dose of nostalgia for Malayalam audiences, starts with a woman filing a case after her brother goes missing, which is followed by multiple murders.
When the police department fails to nail the culprit, Sethurama Iyer is brought on board to solve the mystery, despite opposition from other police officers. And sure enough, he does. After initial challenges, he solves the murder mystery and is 'damn sure' who the killer is. But for reasons unknown, he does not nab the killer.
The basic premise of this murder mystery is intriguing, but the trailer does not offer anything that will grab your attention. The technical aspects such as cinematography and direction also look average. The barrage of close-up shots gives the impression that you are watching a daily soap.
The makers have also done a lot of airbrushing in post-production, probably to make Mammootty look younger, but franky it is distracting, especially when he is in the frame with other actors who are not offered this same privilege.
The teaser for the movie, which was released earlier this month, began with Sethurama Iyer finding a common link between the deaths of Sanjay Gandhi, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi, hinting that the story will revolve around a political conspiracy. But there is not even a mention of this subplot in the trailer.
Along with Mammootty, Renji Panicker and Jagathy Sreekumar are reprising their roles as Rajagopal and Vikram, respectively. The film's cast includes Mukesh, Saikumar, Dileesh Pothan, Soubin Shahir, Anoop Menon and Asha Sharath.
Written by SN Swamy and directed by K Madhu, the investigative thriller is scheduled to be released on 1 May. Watch the trailer below and let us know if you are keen to watch this film.
