Paying homage to the sacrifice made by mothers for their families, the Punjabi-language film Maa, starring Divya Dutta, Gippy Grewal, Gurpreet Ghuggi, Babbal Rai, Rana Ranbir and Prince Kanwaljit Singh, will be released on 6 May, ahead of Mother’s Day on 8 May.

The trailer for the film features a couple, played by Dutta and Ghuggi. Manjeet Kaur (Dutta) is pregnant; her husband is a do-gooder, who helps those who are less fortunate than him. When a relative passes away, the couple decides to adopt their son and raise him with their own child. The boys grow up to be inseparable and Grewal's character showers immense love and affection on his younger brother.

Dutta is shown as a working woman, riding a tractor and tending to her fields. The two boys grow up and while Grewal becomes a farmer, his younger brother pursues sports and seems to become a sportsman. However, some unsavoury elements are keen to usurp the family's land. The mother takes on the villains who then start sowing discord in the family.

We see distance growing between the mother and sons, with the younger son, her own, being led astray. When a character badmouths his mother, Grewal, the adopted son, replies, “My world begins and ends with my mother.” This seems to be the defining spirit of the movie.

Directed by Baljit Singh Deo, the film has been written by Rana Ranbir and produced by Ravneet Kaur Grewal and Gippy Grewal. The music is by Jay K and Desi Crew. The song ‘Rabb Da Roop’ from the film was released last week.
