At the trailer launch of Jayeshbhai Jordaar (2022), Ranveer Singh spoke about the upcoming feature and called it a clean entertainer that one can watch with the whole family, children and grandparents included. “I just wanted to be part of these types of films,” he revealed at the launch. “I feel that people should go to the theatres, not just in ones or twos but in a group.”

The star, dressed in a colourfully printed baggy suit with pink shoes, bounced around the hall and stage like an excited boy.

Ranveer Singh said he was hooked after writer-director Divyang Thakkar first narrated the story to him and added that he went through “a wave of different emotions”. He recalled that they both were crying at the end and hugged one another.

Both Aditya Chopra and Maneesh Sharma were pleasantly surprised that Ranveer Singh agreed to come on board so readily. Incidentally, Chopra had told him that he had a ‘miracle script’ in hand when he called him in for the narration.

Sharma made his directorial debut with Band Baaja Baaraat (2010) which was also Ranveer's first film. The writer-director received the 90-page script through editor Namrata Rao and was reading it for a lark on a day off. But he was so intrigued that he asked Thakkar to come in for a meeting.

“Some scripts are there which need to be made,” Sharma said. “It’s important that it reaches out. Jayeshbhai Jordaar had that quality from Day 1.”

Thakkar has acted in the popular Gujarati films Kevi Rite Jaish (2012), Bey Yaar (2014) and Chasani (2019). He makes his filmmaking debut with Jayeshbhai Jordaar.

Ranveer added, “I loved Jayesh. How can you not love a character like that? He is the most lovable guy you will ever meet on screen. He is all heart.”

The son of a village sarpanch who is set to follow in his footsteps, Jayesh is not a product of the environment he has grown up in. He and his wife (Shalini Pandey) have a daughter and are expecting another child but are under pressure to produce a male child to continue the family line.

Jayesh doesn’t care if he has a son or daughter, but his parents (Boman Irani and Ratna Pathak Shah) want a boy and nothing else. Fearing for his wife, he tries to escape with his family.

Jayeshbhai Jordaar, produced and distributed by Yash Raj Films, is due to be released on 13 May.
