First-time filmmaker Divyang Thakkar’s Jayeshbhai Jordaar revolves around Jayesh (Ranveer Singh), the son of a village headman (Boman Irani) in Gujarat, and his wife (Shalini Pandey). They have a daughter and are expecting another child. Jayesh’s father puts enormous pressure on his son and daughter-in-law to produce a son so that he can succeed Jayesh.
However, after the family carries out an illegal sex-determination test, they learn that the unborn child is a girl. This infuriates Jayesh’s father. The young man, who is progressive and has no problems having another girl, runs away from the village with his wife and daughter.
The trailer of the Yash Raj Films offering makes it clear that the film looks at a serious issue through a humorous lens, without playing down the seriousness of the subject matter. It indicates that the filmmaker seems to have a firm grip on his maiden project. The only issue is that the trailer reveals a lot about the story, something most trailers are guilty of in today’s times.
Irani’s headstrong headman brings to mind Abhishek Shah’s Gujarati movie Hellaro (2019), which featured several regressive characters male characters.
Although it’s too early to say, Singh seems to have perfectly moulded himself into a rustic guy and is likely to give another delightful performance. Shalini Pandey and the child actress playing the daughter have also been perfectly cast. The film also stars Ratna Pathak Shah.
Jayeshbhai Jordaar will be released in theatres on 13 May.
