The Netflix film Thar, starring Anil Kapoor and Harshvarrdhan Kapoor, promises a gritty tale of revenge set in the titular desert, which mostly lies in the state of Rajasthan.
The starkness of the remote location lends a rawness and rustic charm to the trailer, invoking classic westerns.
Directed by Raj Singh Chaudhary, the film takes place in a Rajasthani village, which has a history of violent killings, in the 1980s. A flamboyant local cop Surekha Singh (Anil Kapoor) is investigating a series of brutal murders.
When antique dealer Siddharth (Harshvarrdhan) arrives at the village, he initially charms the women with his polished appearance. However, the police begin to doubt his intentions, and some of the locals do not seem to be too pleased with the idea of Siddharth profiting from their ancient artefacts.
Eventually, Siddharth gets entangled in a rivalry, and all hell breaks loose. With scenes of torture, chase sequences involving horses, a tense background score and a location that is a character in itself, the trailer promises a visually rich cinematic experience where local and western flavours are blended.
Also starring Fatima Sana Shaikh and Satish Kaushik, Thar will be premiered on Netflix on 6 May.
