The upcoming Netflix film Thar (2022), which stars Anil Kapoor and Harshvarrdhan Kapoor, marks the debut of the younger actor as producer. Directed by Raj Singh Chaudhary, the film also stars Fatima Sana Shaikh, Satish Kaushik and Jitendra Joshi.
Harshvarrdhan plays Siddharth, an antique dealer who travels through a small Rajasthani village which has been hit by a series of violent killings. Local cop Surekha Singh (Anil Kapoor) arrives to investigate these killings and runs into Siddharth.
While the father-son duo briefly acted together in the meta thriller AK Vs AK (2020), the upcoming feature will be their project together as producers as well.
Calling the film an experience, the elder Kapoor said, “Harshvarrdhan has a unique approach and his choices of films are also very distinct. The film was brought to me by Harshvarrdhan and he was very passionate about the project and he played an integral part in this film coming together.
“The story strikes the perfect balance between gritty and slick, grainy and smooth, fast paced yet nuanced. It is Harshvarrdhan’s first film as producer and I could see the passion in him from the word go,” he added.
Harshvarrdhan shared that they had tried to do something different with the Hindi Western noir, a genre rarely seen these days in cinema. The actor-turned-producer said, “When I read Thar, I realized right away that it was unique in terms of its mood atmosphere and tone as well as its narrative. I was aware that I was in a situation where I would have to persevere to get what was on the page on to the screen without any compromise.”
He continued, “With a film so ambitious, there was bound to be great learning both in front of and behind the camera for me personally. I believe that out of the few films I’ve done so far Thar has been the most educational experience for me.”
Produced by Anil Kapoor Film Company (AFKC), Thar is due to be premiered on Netflix on 6 May.
