The makers of director Digpal Lanjekar’s Sher Shivraj (2022) had kept the identity of the actor who plays Afzal Khan under wraps.

The actor was finally unveiled today at a grand trailer launch in Mumbai. Hindi film actor Mukesh Rishi is playing Afzal Khan, the villain in this story from 17th century Maratha history.

Through this film, Mukesh Rishi is also making his debut in Marathi cinema.

Speaking at the trailer launch, Mukesh Rishi revealed that this was not the first time he was approached to play Azfal Khan. “Quite a few times I was approached for this role," he said. "But maybe it was written in my fate that I will get to play this role here. I am very happy to be a part of this film.”

The actor believes Afzal Khan will prove to be an important character in his filmography. “I am happy to play a character who is standing in front of Shivaji Maharaj, which is a big deal,” he said. “It is a challenge to be a part of this type of film, which I enjoyed shooting with Digpal saheb. The character of Shivaji Maharaj resides in him and will continue to do so. He understands everything about him, including the little details, after doing an in-depth study.”

Heaping praise on the film's hero, played by Chinmay Mandlekar, he added, “As we all know, Shivaji Maharaj is a hero not only in Maharashtra but all over India. It was because of his passion and strength that no outsider was able to set his eyes here.”

Produced by Mumbai Movie Studios, Raajwarasa Productions and Mulakshar Productions and distributed by UFO Moviez, Sher Shivraj will be released in theatres on 22 April.
