Writer-actor Shivkumar Subrahmanyam dies of cancer at 52

The theatre and film actor won two Filmfare awards, Best Screenplay for Parinda (1989) and Best Story for Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi (2006) with Sudhir Mishra and Ruchi Narain.

Writer-actor Shivkumar Subrahmanyam died of cancer last night in Mumbai. The 52-year-old theatre veteran, who was married to actress Divya Jagdale, was known for penning the screenplays of Parinda (1989) and Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi (2006) for which he won two Filmfare awards.

The cause of death of the artiste, who was last seen in the Netflix film Meenakshi Sundareshwar (2021), was revealed later in the day to be cancer. According to one of Shiv's theatre colleagues, the disease was discovered at a late stage, leaving him no chance of fighting back. Shiv’s son Jahaan died in February just before his 16th birthday.

Shiv, who also wrote the screenplays for 1942: A Love Story (1994), Arjun Pandit (1999) and Chameli (2003), also acted in films and on television.

He became popular for his role as industrialist IM Virani in the Colors television series Mukti Bandhan in 2011. He also appeared in the films Kaminey (2009), Stanley Ka Dabba (2011), That Girl In Yellow Boots (2011), 2 States (2014), Hichki (2018) and the Zee5 feature Nail Polish (2020).

His last rites were completed on Monday morning in Andheri.

The versatile artiste was mourned by the film industry, including his frequent collaborators.
