There were several reports earlier this year about a biopic of former India cricket captain Sourav Ganguly being in the works, but there was no confirmation. Now the man himself has confirmed the news and revealed that the film will be produced by Luv Ranjan’s banner Luv Films.
Ganguly said on Facebook, “Cricket has been my life. It gave [me] confidence and [the] ability to walk forward with my head held high, a journey to be cherished. Thrilled that Luv Films will produce a biopic on my journey and bring it to life for [the] big screen.”
Ganguly first came on the international scene in 1992 when he made his One-Day International debut. Thereafter, he was out of the team for a few years and came back for the Test series against England in 1996. In his debut Test at the historic Lord's ground in London, Ganguly scored a century and announced his arrival.
Ganguly went on to become a prolific middle-order batsman in Tests and opener in ODIs. He then became India's most successful Test captain, a record that he held until he was dethroned by successor Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who in turn lost the title to current captain Virat Kohli. In over 100 Tests, he scored over 7,000 runs with 16 centuries while in over 300 ODIs, he scored more than 11,000 runs with 22 centuries. He was also a useful medium-pace bowler, particularly in limited-overs cricket.
Currently, Ganguly is the chairman of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
There have been reports about Ranbir Kapoor being roped in to play the lead in Ganguly’s biopic but there has been no official announcement as of now.
