The Rapist trailer: Deeply introspective narrative on sexual assault

The trailer of The Rapist makes it clear that Aparna Sen is back with a hard-hitting and introspective narrative on both the perpetrators and the victims of rape. Starring Konkona Sensharma, Arjun Rampal, Tanmay Dhanania and Anindita Bose, the film builds a psychological bridge between the criminal and the victim to explore the grounds that enable individuals to commit the heinous crime.

The trailer begins with a scene of a couple, played by Sensharma and Rampal, having an intimate moment and it is entirely bereft of bright colours. The almost monochrome colour palate amplifies the seriousness of the subject matter.

Going by the visuals, Sensharma's character, who survives a sexual assault incident, makes it a point to understand what kind of conditioning leads individuals to turn violent and carry out such crimes. The incident also causes a rift in the couple's relationship.

Dhanania, who plays the character of a rapist, eventually does some introspection but at the same time, he is ridiculed for even attempting to undergo reformation.

The film seems to make a bold statement about the perceptions of survivors who refuse to be cowed by circumstances.

The Rapist will be screened at the 26^th Busan International Film Festival in South Korea.
