Revolutionaries are always adored and admired and often make great subjects for films. Vicky Kaushal steps into the shoes of one such revolutionary in Shoojit Sircar's Sardar Udham. The film is based on the life of martyr Udham Singh and is set to be released on Amazon Prime Video on 16 October.
The trailer for the film begins with the event that led Udham Singh to undertake the journey to London. The Jallianwala Bagh massacre of 13 April 1919 triggered a wave of anger in India and eventually led to Udham Singh's retribution in the heart of the British capital.
The trailer follows Udham Singh's journey from Punjab to London, wearing several disguises and travelling under assumed names. This subterfuge was key to shadowing the former lieutenant governor of Punjab, Sir Michael O'Dwyer.
The production design of the film catches the eye, with the subtle music leaving a haunting impact. The trailer also delves a bit into Udham Singh's involvement in the mission which took over 20 years before culminating in O'Dwyer's assassination.
In a linear narrative, the trailer outlines the journey of Udham Singh, his plans and motivation, and ends just before the final moment. The trailer also gives the audience the film's perspective on O'Dwyer's role in the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, with the top officer of the Punjab government clearly directing Brigadier General Dyer: 'We have to set an example.'
While it reveals much, the trailer also builds curiousity around the nature of the man and the people around him. Vicky Kaushal looks the part as a determined, broken young man seeking revenge for his country.
The film, with its excellent production design, music and a story by Ritesh Shah and Shubendu Bhattacharya, is set to be released on Amazon Prime Video on 16 October. Sardar Udham also features Banita Sandhu, Amol Parashar, Shaun Scott, Stephen Hogan and Kirsty Averton in important roles.
