Maidaan is a biopic of Syed Abdul Rahim, the first national football team coach of independent India. It was under his mentorship that the Indian team reached the semi-finals of the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. Till date, this remains Indian football’s biggest achievement.
Maidaan was announced in March 2019. But thereafter the film was delayed like every other project by the COVID-19 pandemic. The film faced another hurdle when a large portion of its set was destroyed by the Tauktae cyclone earlier this year. The team had to rebuild the set from scratch, taking a financial toll on producer Boney Kapoor.
Maidan also stars Priyamani, Gajraj Rao and Rudranil Ghosh.
