After the Maharashtra government announced last Saturday that theatres in the state would be allowed to reopen on 22 October, there has been a flurry of release announcements of a large number of Hindi films. This made many wonder when Marathi filmmakers would come to the party.
The wait is now over. Nikhil Mahajan’s much-anticipated Godavari (2021) has now been scheduled for release in theatres on 3 December. The news was shared by Mahajan himself on Twitter.

The film has an ensemble cast of Jitendra Joshi, Vikram Gokhale, Gauri Nalawade, Priyadarshan Jadhav, Sakhi Gokhale and Sanjay Mone. The film also marks Jitendra Joshi's entry into production.
Godavari revolves around Joshi’s character who is fed up of his job of collecting rent for his family of landowners. He wants to break free, but it is not possible for him to run away from his responsibilities.
Godavari will be having its world premiere at the Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF) on 4 October.
A statement from the makers recently said, “With Godavari, Mahajan shifts gears seamlessly into a dramatic space after a six-year hiatus from [Marathi] filmmaking. It marks a decided metamorphosis of directorial style and vision and is his most personal film to date.”
