The trailer of Madhuja Mukherjee’s upcoming film Deep6 features Tillotama Shome, Chandan Roy Sanyal and the city of Kolkata, which itself is one of the characters. Bereft of dialogue, the collage of visuals captured by Avik Mukhopadhyay and thoughtfully woven together by the director herself speaks volumes.
The brief trailer establishes Shome's character as the protagonist with visuals focusing on her diverse and evocative expressions multiple times. The interesting effect produced by the combination of light and shadow reflects the various shades of her character.
A scene at the beginning shows Shome sitting with an aged lady, as the latter sings a popular Shyama Sangeet, a song dedicated to Kali, in a cramped room with the famous painting Girl with a Pearl Earring hanging in the background. While Shome looks girlish and clumsy in this scene, the rest of the trailer projects her in different lights.
She seems to live in a world of her own with her own battles and aspirations, even when she is being caressed by someone on the bed or when she is examining herself in the mirror. As the light falls on her face, it brings out her hidden passions and realizations in an expressive way. As Shome subtly manifests inner bliss through her eyes, the trailer ends on an interesting note with a rather surreal visual.
Prabuddha Banerjee's background score has lent a haunting feel and the composition suggests that the film is deeply psychological in nature.
Deep6 will be screened at the 26th Busan International Film Festival in South Korea.
