Udham Singh was an Indian revolutionary born on 26 December 1899 who assassinated Sir Michael O’Dwyer, lieutenant governor of the Punjab at the time of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre of 13 April 1919, in London on 13 March 1940.
When a period film is made on such a personality, one expects it to have drama, even melodrama. But the teaser for Shoojit Sircar’s Sardar Udham, a film based on the revolutionary, suggests the filmmaker has treated the subject as an intense thriller.
The almost minute-long video shows Vicky Kaushal’s protagonist Udham Singh deeply engrossed in the procedure of making fake passports. But we are never shown his face. We get to see him only when his photo is stuck on the fake passport. This is followed by three gunshots, indicating the assassination of O'Dwyer.
These visuals coupled with the sharp editing and, most importantly, the haunting background score ensure a thrilling experience.
In other words, the film is starkly different from an earlier film on the same personality titled Shaheed Udham Singh (2000). That movie saw Raj Babbar essay the titular role while Gurdas Maan played Bhagat Singh. It also starred Juhi Chawla as Noor Jehan.
Sardar Udham will be released on Amazon Prime Video on 16 October. Watch the teaser below and let us know if you are keen to watch the film.
