Churuli review: Cryptic tale laced with magical realism

Starring Chemban Vinod Jose, Vinay Forrt and Joju George, the Malayalam feature revolves around two officers in pursuit of a wanted criminal. Churuli is one of ten films in the Gala section, including Paolo Sorrentino’s The Hand Of God, Jane Campion’s The Power Of The Dog, and Edgar Wright's Last Night In Soho.

The 34th edition will open with Clint Eastwood's Cry Macho and close with Stephen Chbosky’s musical adaptation of the play Dear Evan Hansen.

Churuli, which had its world premiere at the 25th International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) earlier this year, has been nominated for two technical awards at the 15th Asian Film awards which will be announced on 8 October at the Busan International Film Festival in South Korea.

Pellissery’s Jallikattu (2020) was selected as India's official entry to the 93rd Academy awards last year.
