'Shon Shon' spreads positivity with a tinge of melancholia, says composer writer Soumya Rit

The first song from Arjunn Dutta’s upcoming film Srimati, starring Swastika Mukherjee and Soham Chakraborty, 'Shon Shon' marks the beginning of a new chapter in the protagonist’s life. Composed by Soumya Rit, the soft number has been performed by Somlata Acharyya Chowdhury.

The song was written by Rit in January 2020, three months before Dutta started shooting for the film. “The song is about a new beginning and hopes. It promotes the choice of happiness after losses and speaks of contentment.”

According to him, despite its positivity, there is a tinge of melancholia in the song. “We lose a lot in our journey of life but also get them back in different forms in the end and that’s how life goes on,” he added.

The song features Srimati [Mukherjee] on the brink of a new beginning in life, as she looks into herself while simply enjoying her own company. The dreamy visuals of her taking a solitary tour around the city and indulging in her favourite food, along with the glimpses of reconciliation with her husband after struggling through moments of loneliness, elaborate the story behind the lyrics.

Interestingly, Rit initially did not write the song for Srimati. “I was only humming the song on my own and incidentally, Arjun was present there. He asked me to develop the song so that he could use it later in the film. I would like to give full credit to Arjun for making me lend a full shape to it,” he added.

Rit only had Chowdhury as the vocalist in his mind from the very beginning of the composition. “Fortunately, Somlata di liked the song and I must say that she has rendered it beautifully,” he said. The composer also believes there is always a history behind each and every creation and that composing 'Shon Shon, helped him to find solace at a very crucial time in his life.

'Shon Shon' is Chowdhury’s first collaboration with Soumya Rit and she had instantly agreed to sing the song. “I am personally excited for the film too,” she added.

The release date of Srimati has not been announced yet.
