Producer Ajay Kapoor has bought the rights for the Hindi remake of the much appreciated and successful Tamil film '96 (2018) starring Vijay Sethupathi and Trisha Krishnan.
On the decision of remaking the film in Hindi, Kapoor said in a statement, "'96 was a heartwarming, light-hearted romantic tale that received humongous love from the audience. The story breaks barriers beyond the bounds of language and region, which prompted me to remake the film in Hindi for the national audience.”
On the status of the project, he said, “I am actively working on developing the right script for the narrative along with the director and the right kind of star cast. Once we finalize everything, I would like to make the official announcements.”
Directed by C Prem Kumar, '96 was about childhood sweethearts (Vijay Sethupathi and Trisha) who meet 22 years later at a school reunion and look back on their past. The film was remade in Telugu by the same filmmaker as Jaanu (2020). It starred Sharwanand and Samantha Akkineni.
Just last week, Kapoor announced a film on Indians being evacuated from Afghanistan after the Taliban re-captured the country last month. The film is titled Garud and the director and cast are currently being finalized.
Shooting for another of his projects, the action film Attack (2022), with John Abraham in the lead, was completed recently.
