The official trailer for Dhrubo Banerjee’s upcoming period sports drama Golondaaj (2021) leaves nothing to the imagination as it presents the entire narrative arc of the biopic of Nagendra Prasad Sarbadhikari, father of Indian football, played by Dev Adhikari.

At the same time, it promises a rich visual experience with a lavishly mounted production and a storyline with heightened patriotism and plot intensity.

When the colonial rulers take pride and claim ownership of the game of football, Nagendra Prasad, a young rebel from the Sarbadhikari family known for its spirit of resistance, takes up the challenge of facing them on the playing field and uniting his countrymen against the British.

As more follow under Sarbadhikari’s leadership, he begins to see his dream of a free country, standing up to its oppressors, turn into reality.

The visuals of team members preparing for the game of the rulers, to express resistance, convey an undaunted spirit of patriotism. Needless to say, however, Sarbadhikari's popularity also attracts vicious plotting against him by the British as they refuse to acknowledge the expertise of the natives at the game.

The visuals of Adhikari acing Nagendra Prasad’s skills as a wrestler and romancing his wife (Ishaa Saha) show that, along with depicting the footballing pioneer’s journey, the film will also cater to its star’s image among the masses. While Adhikari fits the role of a leader, his one-dimensional dialogue delivery brings back the essence of the action hero he has played in the past in films like Chaamp (2017) and Kidnap (2019).

Golondaaj promises to depict an unexplored historical chapter when the atrocities of the British pushed a native rebel to challenge them at their own game. Despite possible shortcomings, the film is sure to offer an entertaining experience for its audience during Puja.

Also featuring Anirban Bhattacharya, Srikanto Acharya, Joydeep Mukherjee, Alexx O'Nell, Indrasish Roy and John Bhattacharya, Golondaaj is slated for a theatrical release on 10 October. Watch the trailer below and let us know if you are keen to watch this film.
