Garud is based on the rescue mission in Afghanistan after the Taliban's return; see motion poster

The film is produced by Ajay Kapoor and Subhash Kale and scripted by Mission Mangal writer Nidhi Singh Dharma.

Last month, when the Taliban recaptured Afghanistan as American forces exited the war-torn country, a group of Indians was rescued and brought back home.

Just a few weeks after the operation took place, a movie has been announced on the rescue by producers Ajay Kapoor and Subhash Kale. Its title is Garud.

Revealing details about the subject, the makers said in a statement, “Inspired by real events, Garud presents a fictionalized depiction of the rescue mission in Afghanistan, based on the story of an officer in the Garud commando force, a special forces unit of the Indian Air Force.”

Kapoor has in the past produced films based on nationalistic themes like Baby (2015), Sarbjit (2016), Airlift (2016), Parmanu (2018) and Romeo Akbar Walter (2019). He is also the producer of the upcoming John Abraham- and Jacqueline Fernandez-starrer Attack (2021).

Explaining his reason for backing Garud, Kapoor said in a statement, “Subhash and I go a long way and have been friends for years. When he approached me for Garud, I was hooked to the script and instantly came on board. The film narrates an inspirational, patriotic story with a strong emotional connect. We are looking forward to mount the story on a large scale to do justice to the script.”

The director and the cast will be announced later. The film has been scripted by Nidhi Singh Dharma. This is her second project after the successful Mission Mangal (2019).

Kale added, “Garud is a very special project for me. I have been working on developing a script like this for a long time and I am glad the film is finally materializing with a brilliant producer like Ajay Kapoor. It is my passion project and I want to give it the best treatment possible. We are aiming for an international look, taking inspiration from real-life events.”

The Garud motion poster has the image of a plane emerging from a war zone with the song ‘Mera Bharat Hai Mahaan’ playing in the background.
