Subhrajit Mitra’s upcoming film Avijatrik will be released in theatres on 26 November. Based on the last section of Bibhutibhushan Bandopadhyay's novel Aparajito, Avijatrik also marks the debut of Madhur Bhandarkar as a producer in the Bengali film industry.
Starring Arjun Chakraborty as Apu, the film, shot in black and white, takes off where Satyajit Ray’s Apu Trilogy ended. Avijatrik also features Arpita Chatterjee, Sabyasachi Chakrabarty, Ditipriya Roy, and Sreelekha Mitra.
The film, conceived as a tribute to Ray, was first premiered at 26th Kolkata International Film Festival and was also screened at the 51st International Film Festival of India, Goa, the 18th Chennai International Film Festival and the 38th Miami Film Festival.
Avijatrik chronicles Apu’s journey with his son Kajal around different parts of the country and shows how the philosophical impact of it alters his outlook on life and relationships.
The film also competed for the Golden Goblet Award at the 24th Shanghai International Film Festival and was selected for screening at the International Film Panorama section there.
Recently the film had its UK premiere and was screened for only one night at London’s Ciné Lumière, Midlands Arts Centre in Birmingham and HOME Manchester, as part of their Not Just Bollywood season.
