The teaser of Anirban Bhattacharya’s directorial debut Mandaar reveals that the actor-turned-director has created a theatrical and symbolic adaptation of William Shakespeare’s tragedy Macbeth. Featuring Debasish Mondal, Sohini Sarkar, Debesh Roy Chowdhury and Sankar Debnath, Mandaar is Hoichoi’s first production for its World Classics category.
The teaser begins with an aerial shot of a man lying along the seacoast. In a voiceover, Roy Chowdhury states that the fish in the sea are not really aware of when they will be devoured by others, clearly hinting at the source material's basic theme of political strife. The teaser then presents a collage of symbolic visuals which do not really clarify Bhattacharya’s line of thought.
A dead hooked fish, a skeleton-like lady with vermillion smeared on her forehead, calling to mind the three witches of the tragedy and a boy performing acrobatics with weird facial expressions lend a haunting feel to the production. There is a stillness in these visuals which is magnified by the metallic colour palate.
The stillness breaks when Mondal’s character lifts up a spear in rage and eventually commits the murder, splattering blood on Sarkar’s face. The actress’s ambiguous facial expression aptly conveys the initial satisfaction of Lady Macbeth.
Mandaar will be streamed on Hoichoi soon.
