A sister's unconditional love forms the centrepiece of Era Saravanan's Udanpirappe. The title of the film means 'sibling' in Tamil, and the trailer captures the essence of that bond. While not overflowing with emotion, the trailer's theme is social justice, which adds a layer to the film.
The rural drama begins with visuals of a village festival, with the feisty Jyotika leading the way. The only problem in her life seems to be the constant clash between her husband (Samuthirakani) and brother (M Sasikumar).
While her husband is a law-abiding teacher who believes in pursuing justice through non-violence, her brother has no qualms roughing up people to get the job done. While both espouse egalitarian and progressive ideals, their methods put them at odds with each other.
There is also a villain who threatens to uproot the village system through capitalistic means, which brings the threat down to this little family.
Jyotika looks the part in her 50th film, with Samuthirakani taking on the supporting role. M Sasikumar's action-hero element feels a bit overdone in the trailer, but we will have to wait and see the treatment in the film before passing judgement.
Udanpirappe is produced by Suriya and Jyotika's 2D Entertainment and also features Soori. The film will be released on Amazon Prime Video on 14 October. Check out the trailer here and let us know if you are keen to watch the film.
