The trailer for Rajinikanth’s forthcoming Tamil film Annaatthe (2021) was released last evening and actor-producer Dhanush took to Twitter to say he is thrilled to see the film bring back the vintage Rajinikanth reminiscent of Muthu (1995), Arunachalam (1997) and Padayappa (1999).

Going by the visuals of the trailer, Annaatthe looks like a quintessential rural entertainer with Rajinikanth being his effervescent self. The film sees Rajinikanth play a village head and loving brother to Keerthy Suresh's character.

Dhanush wrote: “Annaatthe! Vintage Rajinism! So excited to see Thalaivar in Muthu, Arunachalam, Padayappa vibes. Can’t wait to see his magic on screen yet again. Vaa saami! This Diwali storming the theatres இது தலைவர் திருவிழா (sic).”

Directed by Siva, the film also features Khushbu Sundar, Meena and Jagapathi Babu in key roles. The film has been dubbed in Telugu and titled Peddanna, and will be released simultaneously with the Tamil version.

Rajinikanth was previously seen on the big screen in AR Murugadoss’s Darbar (2020), which was a colossal flop. The film featured him as a police officer who sets out to avenge the death of his daughter. Suniel Shetty made his Tamil debut with the project.

After Darbar tanked, Rajinikanth agreed to take a 50% pay cut for Annaatthe. Reportedly, his remuneration was reduced from Rs118 crore for Darbar to Rs58 crore for Annaatthe.

Annaatthe, which has been produced by Sun Pictures, has music by D Imman.

Earlier this week, the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke award for contribution to cinema was conferred upon Rajinikanth.

On being presented the award, Rajinikanth said: “I dedicate this award to my guru and mentor K Balachander sir, whom I remember with gratitude. I also dedicate this award to my brother Sathyanarayanarao Gaikwad, who was a father figure. He raised me with great values and instilled spirituality in me."
