In director Abhishek Jain’s Hindi debut Hum Do Hamare Do (2021), the girl meets the boy, they fall in love and the boy gets fake parents to seal the deal. The family comedy features Rajkummar Rao as a smitten but driven suitor Dhruv determined to marry his girlfriend Anya, played by Kriti Sanon, even though he doesn’t have a family.
With the help of his friend, played by Aparshakti Khurana, the two manage to find people who can pose as his parents. Hilariously, the older couple, played by Paresh Rawal and Ratna Pathak Shah, has a history, and Dipti Kashyap, played by the latter, seems to have rejected him in his youth, an incident Rawal's character hasn’t gotten over yet.
Somehow they agree to pose as his parents and present themselves haphazardly to Anya’s family. Craziness ensues as Rawal’s character proposes to an embarrassed Dipti, almost derailing Dhruv’s perfect plans.
Hum Do Hamare Do, compiled with seasoned performers, looks to be an entertaining comedy peppered with laugh-out-loud moments of absurdity. There seem to be a few similarities to the Zee5 release 14 Phere (2021) starring Vikrant Massey and Kriti Kharbanda, where the couple gets fake parents as well for their respective families.
However, Jain’s feature, produced by Dinesh Vijan, seems to balance the madness with actual hilarity, which didn’t seem to be the case with 14 Phere. The film also stars Manu Rishi Chadha, Prachee Shah Paandya and Mazel Vyas.
Featuring a story by Deepak Venkateshan and screenplay and dialogues by Prashant Jha, Hum Do Hamare Do is due to be released on 29 October on Disney+ Hotstar.
