Sivakarthikeyan’s latest Tamil film, Doctor (2021), has registered a fabulous opening at the box office. As per reports and industry trackers, the film grossed Rs8.2 crore in Tamil Nadu on its first day despite theatres being operated at 50% occupancy.
The acclaimed dark comedy, which has been directed by Kolamaavu Kokila (2018) helmer Nelson Dilipkumar, was released in cinema halls last Friday. The film was originally supposed to arrive in theatres last year.
Doctor sees Sivakarthikeyan play an army doctor, who goes after a human trafficking gang.
As per industry tracker Ramesh Bala, the film has performed exceptionally well.

Doctor also stars Priyanka Arul Mohan, Vinay, Yogi Babu and Archana Chandokhe. It sees Milind Soman make an extended cameo.
The movie was also praised for presenting Sivakarthikeyan in an avatar that’s unlike anything he’s played so far in his career.
On taking up a character with minimal lines, Sivakarthikeyan said: “I’m trying to experiment in whatever ways I can within the commercial space. While I agree that I play a serious character with very few dialogues, the film will still be entertaining. I think that’s what makes Nelson a very interesting filmmaker. Even though he explores the world of kidnapping in Doctor; he’s still managed to explore humour out of very serious situations. If you look at Kolamaavu Kokila and Doctor, you realise that Nelson likes exploring dark subjects in a lighter vein and that I think is his style of storytelling.”
Sivakarthikeyan has two more projects in the pipeline: the campus romantic drama Don and science-fiction comedy Ayalaan, which features an alien as the central character.
