Box office: Rajinikanth’s Annaatthe crosses Rs100 crore benchmark worldwide

The film has been heavily panned for its over-the-top nature and overly sentimental scenes.

Superstar Rajinikanth’s latest Tamil film Annaatthe, despite opening to mixed responses from audiences and critics alike, crossed the Rs100 crore benchmark worldwide three days since its release.

Directed by Siva, Annaatthe is the story of a village official, played by Rajinikanth, who goes to Kolkata to protect his sister.

The film has been heavily panned for its over-the-top nature, melodrama and overly sentimental scenes. Keerthy Suresh played Rajinikanth’s sister in the movie.

Trade analyst Trinath tweeted on Sunday, “In Tamil Nadu, the film has done unbelievably well at the box office, despite the mixed response from all quarters. Annaatthe has breached into Rs. 100 crore club in just three days worldwide. Since it was a Diwali weekend, audiences came in hordes to watch the movie. It has to be seen how the film will hold during the weekdays (sic)."

Annaatthe is Rajinikanth's ninth film that is a member of the fabled Rs100 crore club.

The film features Kushboo Sundar, Meena and Jagapathi Babu. The film has been dubbed in Telugu, and it had a simultaneous release with the Tamil version.
