Marakkar is Keerthy’s big comeback to Malayalam cinema after a gap of seven years. She had made her debut with a lead role in the Malayalam film Geethaanjali (2013), but since then she has been busy in Tamil and Telugu cinema.
The film was supposed to hit the screens last March, but the release was postponed indefinitely on account of the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The film, produced by Anthony Perumbavoor, also stars Arjun, Suniel Shetty, Manju Warrier and Siddique. It will also be released in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi.
A few months ago, there were reports that the film could be released directly on an OTT platform, but in an interview to the website Sify.com, the director clarified that the film would only be released in cinema halls.
“Marakkar is a big-budget film that can be enjoyed only on the big screen," Priyadarshan said. "Even if I have to wait for another six months it will only have a theatrical release. Mohanlal, Antony Perumbavoor and me, we are on the same page as far as the release is concerned and we are sure a big tentpole film like Marakkar will have a big screen release before going the digital way.”
He also asked that if the team were to opt for a digital release, which OTT platform would be willing to pay Rs150 crore for it.
