In the trailer of Avijit Sen’s upcoming film Tonic, Paran Bandopadhyay steals the show alongside Dev Adhikari, who plays the titular character. Bandopadhyay’s animated facial expressions and body language make the first half of the trailer entertaining to watch and raises expectations for the film.
Jaladhar Sen (Bandopadhyay) is compelled to lead a toned-down life because of the diktats of his authoritarian son (Sujan Mukhopadhyay). His son even decides which fish Jaladhar should eat and keeps the septuagenarian firmly in check. Jaladhar’s friend stokes his desire to celebrate his upcoming wedding anniversary in a grand manner. However, his son, who celebrated his own anniversary in Bangkok, decides to host just a small rooftop get-together for his parents.
As Jaladhar begins to lose all hope, a travel agent named Tonic allows him and his wife (Shakuntala Barua) to revisit their days of youth by taking them on adventurous rides and partaking of various indulgences together.
The visuals are interspersed with funny moments between Jaladhar and Tonic. The latter's line, 'Sheet grishma barsha Tonic e bhorsa [Whether it be rain or shine, Tonic is at your side]' makes it evident that in the film, like a trustworthy companion with solutions to every problem, Tonic ensures Jaladhar comes out of his shell and enjoys living life to the fullest. The snippets of Jaladhar's son and his daughter-in-law (Koneenica Banerjee) expressing shock over certain behavioural developments in the elderly couple also suggest that Tonic makes it a point to keep all their escapades under the radar.
Perhaps the trailer would have been more intriguing if the episode of Jaladhar’s son placing an advertisement for his 'missing' parents were not disclosed.
Tonic is slated to be released on 24 December.
