Jersey trailer: Shahid Kapoor-starrer is high on emotions

The cricket drama, the Hindi remake of Gowtam Tinnamuri's Telugu film of the same name, revolves around a father and son.

Sports dramas are generally about an individual or a team’s struggle to attain glory against all odds. But Gowtam Tinnamuri’s Jersey doesn’t follow that route as the film is more of an emotional journey set against the backdrop of the game of cricket.

Jersey is the Hindi remake of the filmmaker's 2019 Telugu movie of the same name starring Nani.

Because of the unusual theme, the main conflict in the film, going by the trailer, isn’t about an aspiring player’s talent or ability. The film sees a down-and-out ex-cricketer (Shahid Kapoor) struggling to make ends meet but still wanting to buy an expensive team India jersey for his son (Ronit Kamra, who played the same character in the original movie).

His wife [Mrunal Thakur], who is much more successful financially, is miffed at her husband for wanting to fulfil their son’s cricket dreams. Shahid’s character gets encouragement from his ex-coach (Pankaj Kapur). He reminds him of his once-glorious career as a cricketer, which, unfortunately, was cut short.

Jersey seems to have emotional depth as you feel for the protagonist from the trailer itself. The father-son bonding strikes a chord and the troubled relationship between the husband and wife is also interesting. The film also appears to have great music.

Kapoor succeeds at being passionate. The scene where he is frustrated and angry instantly reminds you of his character in his last outing Kabir Singh (2019). The kid doesn’t get much scope to shine in the trailer, although he evokes sympathy. Thakur’s rude behaviour seems realistic.

Jersey is the second film where real-life father and son Shahid Kapoor and Pankaj Kapur are acting together.

The film is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on 31 December, just six days after another keenly awaited cricket film, 83, is released.
