Meet the 'Atrangis' – Akshay Kumar, Dhanush and Sara Ali Khan; see motion posters

Before the film's trailer comes out tomorrow, the makers of Aanand L Rai’s Atrangi Re (2021) have given fans a sneak peek into the main characters played by Akshay Kumar, Dhanush and Sara Ali Khan.

Going by the motion poster featuring Akshay Kumar, he lives up to the film's title and we see him in various get-ups — as a drummer, a magician and as Salim, son of the Mughal emperor Akbar. Speaking about the character, filmmaker Rai said in a tweet, “If magic in every frame is what you seek, look no further than Akshay Kumar in this atrangi [weird or outlandish] love story.”

Atrangi Re is Rai’s second collaboration with Dhanush after the hugely successful Raanjhanaa (2013), which marked the South star's debut in Hindi cinema. His motion poster suggests that he plays a happy-go-lucky character called Vishu, always in a celebratory mood.

“Collaborating with Dhanush again was delightful. Vishu’s character is everything an atrangi love story like this could wish for,” commented Rai.

Dhanush tweeted, “A film that’s very close to my heart, Atrangi Re. Thank you my bhai Aanand L Rai for the faith, Himanshu Sharma [writer] for Vishu and thank you AR Rahman sir for being the backbone of this film.” 

Lastly, Sara Ali Khan’s character Rinku appears to be on a serious mission. Her determination is visible. “Meet the heart of this atrangi love story, Rinku,” wrote Rai.

Atrangi Re will be released on Disney+ Hotstar, the first time a film directed by Rai is being released digitally.
