A local court in Kolkata has held actress-MP Nusrat Jahan and business tycoon Nikhil Jain’s wedding to be “not legally valid”.

The order came four months after Nusrat Jahan said the wedding, which took place in Bodrum, Turkey, in 2019, was recognized under Turkish law but was invalid in India.

According to a report in The Hindustan Times newspaper, the judge ruled, “The alleged marriage held on 19/06/2019 at Bodrum, Turkey, in between the plaintiff and the defendant is not legally valid. The suit is, thus, disposed of on admission.”

On 9 June, the actress, now a member of Parliament from the Trinamool Congress, had issued a statement saying her inter-faith marriage was not registered in India under the Special Marriage Act and hence invalid. She further said Jain “illegally held back” her jewellery and other belongings after their separation and that “funds were mishandled” from her bank accounts without her consent.

Jain, however, claimed that he had requested Nusrat Jahan several times to get their marriage registered after she said it was invalid in India, but the latter avoided doing so. He claimed to be living separate from her since November last year and also filed for an annulment in Kolkata after she issued the statement.

Nusrat Jahan became the single mother of a boy on 26 August.
