A woman past her dating prime, a commitment-phobic man living with his sister, and a teenager caught in the crossfire. These character descriptions spell out emotional drama and unintentional comedy.
Hiccups And Hookups, which marks Lara Dutta Bhupathi's digital debut alongside Prateik Babbar and Shinnova, sees the actress explore a genre that has slowly become popular in India with Four More Shots Please (2019).
The actress plays Vasudha, a divorced mum to a teenager named Kavu (Shinnova) who is trying to get back in the dating game. With her dating and flirting game being rusty, her brother Akhil (Babbar) steps in to help her find a soulmate.
Between Akhil's commitment phobia, Vasudha's quest for sexual freedom and intimacy, and Kavu's growing pains, the series is a comedy of errors. As the trio says, "We are not normal."
Babbar looks the part as the eccentric playboy who goes against society while Dutta Bhupathi plays a hassled, sassy mother who is trying to find the balance between mindless hook-ups and meaningful relationships. The role is a refreshing turn of pace for the actress who has been sidelined to bit parts in commercial Hindi films.
Directed by Kunal Kohli, the series is based on the US show Casual and also features Meiyang Chang, Divya Seth and Meera Chopra.
