Mainstream Hindi cinema's love affair with biopics started roughly a decade back. This slowly gave a rise to the CGI-heavy historical epic, the latest examples of which are Panipat (2019) and Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior (2020).
In Yash Raj Films' Prithviraj, Akshay Kumar plays Prithviraj Chauhan, the 12th century ruler of the erstwhile Sapadalaksha region who repulsed the forces of Muhammad of Ghor, the marauding ruler of the Ghurid dynasty.
The teaser of the movie gives a glimpse of its grand scale, depicting a battle scene between the armies of Prithviraj Chauhan and Muhammad of Ghor, played by Sanjay Dutt. This short scene is enough to generate interest in the film.
Akshay’s character is introduced with a lot of fanfare, as expected. He is every inch a warrior and a king. Dutt, on the other hand, doesn’t appear that heroic. The film also stars Sonu Sood and introduces viewers to Manushi Chhillar, winner of the Miss World 2017 in period attire.
Speaking about the film, Akshay said in a statement, “He is a legend, he is one of the bravest warriors and he is one of the most upright kings that our country has ever seen. We hope that Indians worldwide love our salute to this mighty brave heart. We have tried to present his life story in the most authentic way possible and the film is a homage to his unmatched bravery and courage.”
Prithviraj has been written and directed by Chandraprakash Dwivedi, who is known for helming the classic Doordarshan serial Chanakya.
Prithviraj will be released on 21 January 2022.
