Kurup, a crime drama inspired by true events starring Dulquer Salmaan, will be released in theatres on 12 November 2021. The film is expected to be shown on 1,500 screens worldwide.

Kurup will be released in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi. The movie is the second South Indian film to have a global theatrical release after the pandemic struck India, the first being the Rajinikanth-led Annaatthe (2021), which had 1,000 screens for its opening.

The film is inspired by the life of India’s longest-wanted fugitive, Sukumara Kurup, who was accused of murder and faked his own death to escape. The movie has been directed by Srinath Rajendran. It features a stellar cast including Indrajith Sukumaran, Sunny Wayne, Shine Tom Chacko, Sobhita Dhulipala, Anupama Parameswaran and Shivajith Padmanaban.

Co-produced by Dulquer Salmaan’s banner Wayfarer Films and M Star Entertainments, the theatrical release of Kurup was postponed several times owing to the pandemic. While the OTT route was being considered initially, the makers of the film decided to opt for a theatrical release after the legendary actor Mammootty, Dulquer Salmaan's father, advised against it.

Speaking of the film, Dulquer said, "The positive response vindicates our decision to go for a theatrical release. We are grateful to the movie lovers and cinema-goers across the country for acknowledging our efforts and supporting good cinema. We are delighted to see that Kurup with its gripping storytelling and sleek production value is reviving the excitement of watching movies on the big screen in the post-pandemic phase."

The trailer of the movie was screened at Dubai's Burj Khalifa on 10 November, making it the first Malayalam movie to be featured on the world’s tallest building. The actor had shared an image of the event.
