Sudeshna Roy and Abhijit Guha have recently finished directing their upcoming film Jai Kali Kalkattawali, starring Nusrat Jahan, Susmita Chatterjee, Somraj Maity and others.
The romantic comedy is based on the adventures of three fraudsters Anish [Chakraborty], Sujay [Maity] and Mili [Chatterjee], involving a precious image of the goddess Kali, and the love story of Anish and Raka [Jahan]. Jai Kali Kalkattawali is the first film the director duo has wrapped up since the pandemic hit last year.
"It's a fun film. We had the story in mind for a long time. Finally, we have finished shooting thanks to Shadow Films," said Roy.
Jai Kali Kalkattawali marks Roy’s first collaboration with Jahan. “I have always admired Nusrat as a woman. I have worked with Soham in Dekh Kemon Lage (2017) and watched him in other films as well. He has been very helpful throughout the shoot," she said.
The filmmaker did not have much trouble explaining the scenes and blocking to the lead actors, and working with the supporting cast — Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, Padmanabha Dasgupta, Sumit Samaddar, Kanchan Mullick and Sudip Mukerjee — was a rather easy job for her. "They are established actors and it is quite easy to work with them; hence, we had a lot of fun during the shoot," Roy said.
According to Roy, the duo made some departures in their shooting pattern while making the film. "This is a fast-paced story. A lot of people are asking me whether the film is based on friendship, love story or mystery. I would like to say that this is a potpourri of a lot of elements, including fun, thrills, romance, spontaneous chase and action sequences," said the director.
Roy said that the entire team had fun doing a lot of improvisation on the sets, as the film is not dialogue-based, but action-oriented. "The actors have added to the improvisations, but no one has gone overboard. Everyone is accommodating and spontaneous and they also took care of the continuity of the shots," she said.
