The trailer for the upcoming Hoichoi web-series Mandaar, an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth, suggests that actor Anirban Bhattacharya has brought a lot of elements from his experience in theatre to bear on his debut directorial venture.
The symbolic approach of the adaptation, larger-than-life look of the characters and theatrical cinematic composition make the trailer intriguing and complex.
Mandaar is set in the coastal locale of Geilpur. Several myths and anecdotes associated with the place play crucial roles in Bhattacharya’s adaptation of the classic tragedy.
While the visuals successfully conceal the underlying significance of the anecdotes and their connection to the prophecies uttered in the trailer, it is clear that the series will delve into the theme of vices — greed for power, lust, and how the characters are governed by these inner demons.
The setting of Mandaar adds to the complexities of Shakespeare’s characters. The most interesting part is that Bhattacharya has set the royal characters in a marginalized section of society. Debasish Mondal as Mandaar, based on Macbeth, and Sohini Sarkar as Lady Macbeth’s adapted version Laili exude different shades with their layered performances. Their acts offer an unapologetic celebration of hunger for power and lust, but, at the same time, they do not hide while drowning in the tragic consequences of their actions. In a way, the adaptation promises to reinforce the universal approach of Shakespeare's works, irrespective of context.
Mandaar will be streamed on Hoichoi from 19 November. Watch the trailer below and let us know if you are keen to watch the series.
