There were reports yesterday about the producers of the Ajay Devgn-starrer Maidaan (2021) thinking of releasing the film directly on an OTT (over-the-top) platform.
The reports claimed that the makers were encouraged by the example of Salman Khan's Radhe (2021), which was released on an OTT platform as well as on a pay-per-view basis. Besides, like Radhe, Maidaan is a Zee Studios film.
However, the producers of Maidaan have denied these reports. Boney Kapoor, Akash Chawla and Arunava Joy Sengupta said in a joint official statement, “We would like to share that there is currently no conversation with any streaming platform for pay-per-view release of Maidaan. Our focus, at present, is to complete the film keeping everyone’s safety in mind and in full compliance of protocols laid down by the government.”
Directed by Amit Ravindernath Sharma, Maidaan is a biopic of Syed Abdul Rahim, independent India’s first national football coach. It was under Rahim tutelage that India's football team reached the semi-finals of the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, a performance the country has never equalled since, let alone surpassed.
Maidaan stars Priyamani in the role of Rahim's wife.
