Director, writer and lyricist Pranit Kulkarni died in Pune yesterday after a long battle with cancer. He was 50.

News of Kulkarni's death was shared by actor-filmmaker Pravin Tarde on Facebook. Tarde and Kulkarni had co-directed the acclaimed Marathi movie Deool Band (2015).

Sharing his grief, Tarde wrote, “My brother Pranit has gone. The one who had the blessings of goddess Saraswati is no more. One day won’t be enough to write about the lyricist, writer and director. Shall surely do that some other day.”

Besides co-directing the film, Kulkarni also wrote the screenplay and lyrics for Deool Band. He is also known for penning the lyrics of the super-hit song ‘Aa Ra Ra Ra Khatarnak’ from Tarde’s acclaimed directorial venture Mulshi Pattern (2018). He also wrote the songs for films like Mr & Mrs Sadachari (2016) and Huntash (2017).

In 2019, Kulkarni made his own acting debut with the family movie Wedding Cha Shinema (2019), in which he played a supporting role.

Kulkarni started off in theatre through the state-level drama competition Firodiya Karandak and then entered commercial theatre. He went on to write and direct Marathi television serials, including the popular All The Best. He was also the writer of the TV show Lakshya, which is currently on air on Star Pravah.
