The SonyLIV web-series sees Sohum Shah play her husband, a veteran politician, who hands her the reins of power.

It seems filmmaker Subhash Kapoor has a deep interest in political dramas where women occupy positions of power. After Madam Chief Minister (2021), in which Richa Chadha’s character becomes the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, the web-series Maharani, which he has created, sees Huma Qureshi head the government of the state of Bihar.
Going by the trailer, it is safe to say that the basic storyline of Maharani is different from that of Madam Chief Minister.
Maharani is set in the 1990s when Bihar was experiencing political turbulence. Bheema Bharti (Sohum Shah), the chief minister of the state, is bedridden after being attacked. After he steps down from his post, there’s speculation as to who will be his successor.
Bheema names his wife Rani Bharti (Huma Qureshi) as his successor. If Bheema's aides are bewildered, Rani is shocked because not only is she unlettered, she is also completely ignorant about politics.
While Madam Chief Minister appeared to be inspired by the journey of the real-life politician Mayawati, the main character of Maharani bears a slight resemblance to Rabri Devi, the wife of veteran leader Lalu Prasad Yadav.
The trailer of Maharani piques your interest with its interesting storyline and the casting of Shah, Qureshi and Amit Sial, the latter of which has slowly become an OTT star.
Having said that, the makers have, surprisingly, ensured that the duration of the trailer is shorter than that of its teaser, which showed more glimpse of Rani’s character.
Directed by Karan Sharma, Maharani will be streamed on SonyLIV from 28 May.
