Tejaswini Pandit has said that not only women but every human being should be celebrated every day.
“I think the moment we stop celebrating Women’s Day will be the time when women all over the world will be independent. Why do we feel the need to celebrate her just one day? I feel not just women but humans should be celebrated every day. Being alive should be celebrated every day,” she said in a chat with Cinestaan at a recent Women’s Day event organized by Planet Marathi.
She added, “I feel the reason for celebrating [Women's Day] is to remind [a woman[ that now she is walking shoulder-to-shoulder with men and growing in different fields. But I feel this is only limited to cities and urban areas. It is important for rural women to know why we are celebrating this day.”
Pandit also strongly believes that the larger need is to stop crimes against women. “Just posting about Women’s Day and celebrating her by taking her out for dinner on that day is not important. From 9 March you will again have news about rapes and domestic violence. This must stop,” she said.
Pandit was last seen in the MX Player web-series Samantar (2020), where she was cast opposite Swwapnil Joshi. She will now be seen in the second season.
As far as films are concerned, she said not much experimentation is being done with actresses in terms of looks. "For example, look at Priyanka Chopra in Barfi! (2012). I would be so kicked on doing something like that. I think this happens only in historical films. In films being made today, character sketching doesn’t happen much. They say it’s a very layered character but what do you mean by layered?” she said.
Pandit also feels female characters should be more real. “I think now we should go into real-life characters,” she feels. “I think Anurag Kashyap has been doing that for quite a long time. I think more and more people should do that. I keep on searching for stuff that is different. I really appreciate the filmmakers and people who show guts regarding this.”
She credits Anant Mahadevan for being the only filmmaker who saw her as the younger version of the protagonist in Mee Sindhutai Sapkal (2010).
“Generally, my appearance is glamorous. But Anant Mahadevan thinking of putting me into Sindhutai’s role is commendable. Nobody else has ever done that. I really appreciate his guts. This also shows his faith in himself as a director. If you are confident about the actress and are sure of changing her looks then that’s very important. That’s what Anant Mahadevan did with me,” she said.
