The historical war drama The Battle Of Bhima Koregaon (2021), which stars Arjun Rampal, will be released on 17 September.
The makers have announced the release date via a poster, which shows a determined Rampal standing tall amid a bloody battle. This is the actor's first historical film.
The film deals with the battle that took place on 1 January 1818 between the British East India Company and the Peshwa faction of the Maratha confederacy at Bhima Koregaon near Pune.
The British forces, which comprised a large number of soldiers from the low-caste Mahar community, among others, defeated a 28,000-strong force led by Peshwa Baji Rao II. The battle is looked upon as a symbol of victory by the lower castes. Every year the event is commemorated on 1 January after Dalit leader BR Ambedkar, in 1927, visited the site of a memorial erected by the British to immortalize the fallen soldiers.
The bicentenary celebrations of the battle got embroiled in controversy when people from two communities engaged in violent clashes.
The Battle Of Bhima Koregaon sees Digangana Suryavanshi and Abhimanyu Singh play Mahar Ladaaka and Peshwa Bajirao II respectively. The film also stars Sunny Leone in the role of a spy who doubles up as a courtesan for the Peshwas.
The film credits Ramesh Thete as the director, producer, writer, music composer and singer.
The Battle Of Bhima Koregaon will be clashing with Anubhav Sinha’s Ayushmann Khurrana-starrer Anek.
