AR Rahman's patience knows no bounds. The music composer began work on his debut as a writer and producer back in 2017, with a trailer launch in 2019. However, his magnum opus, 99 Songs (2021), is yet to arrive in theatres.
With a new trailer being released earlier this week, the film shows glimpses of revival with its release date now set for 16 April. Featuring newcomers Ehan Bhatt and Edilsy Vargas in the lead roles, the film revolves around a musician's obsession with a song to change the world and the experiences which stimulate that song.
The new trailer for the film is a lot more cohesive and streamlined than the one released before. The earlier one was more abstract, revolving around the obsession of the musician (Bhatt). The new trailer builds a holistic story around the young man. His father's warning about music and his grandfather's love for it drive him deeper into the art form. However, it isn't until he falls in love with Vargas's character that he truly discovers the purpose and extent of his obsession.
The crisply cut trailer is intriguing and carries bits of some captivating compositions. A musical, the film will have 14 original compositions by Rahman. The abstract elements are still there but are built up by the storyline. The film also has a composed acting presence in veterans Manisha Koirala, Ram Kapoor and Lisa Ray, among others.
Directed by Vishwesh Krishnamoorthy, 99 Songs is scheduled to be released in theatres on 16 April. Watch the trailer below and let us know if you are keen to watch the film.
