Sanjay Gupta's gangster drama Mumbai Saga registered an opening collection of Rs2.75 crore nett on Friday, according to BoxOfficeIndia.com.

This is the same amount raked in by horror comedy Roohi on its release day, 11 March. But Mumbai Saga's number is more impressive because the film arrived in theatres on a working day. Roohi was released on Mahashivratri, a public holiday.

While the openings of both films constitute a positive sign for the industry, it remains to be seen if this trend continues given the disturbing rise in COVID-19 cases in many parts of the country, particularly in Maharashtra.

Collections for Mumbai Saga starring Emraan Hashmi and John Abraham were restricted by the 50% occupancy rule imposed on cinema halls across Maharashtra and some other states.

According to BoxOfficeIndia.com, the film collected Rs81 lakh nett in the Mumbai region alone, where Roohi had raked in Rs65 lakh on its opening day.

With its reported budget of around Rs40 crore, the first weekend and the coming week will be critical for Mumbai Saga's producers.

Meanwhile, Janhvi Kapoor's Roohi continued its good run at the box office, earning Rs50 lakh nett on its eighth day in theatres. This return was 50% lower than the previous day's. The film's overall collection now stands at Rs16 crore. Its estimated budget was Rs30 crore.
