Kamathipura trailer: Meera Chopra battles demons in series set in Mumbai’s underbelly

Directed by Shravankumar Tiwari, the seven-episode show will be streamed on Disney+ Hotstar from 8 March for free.

Mumbai’s red-light area has sparked a sudden interest among storytellers. In the wake of the release of the trailer of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Gangubai Kathiawadi, which is centred on an infamous madam, a seven-episode web-series Kamathipura has been announced.

Set in the underbelly of India’s financial capital, the story unfolds in the titular red-light area in South Mumbai’s Grant Road area. Police inspector Anjali Dangle (Meera Chopra) faces a tough challenge after three girls are murdered one after the other.

The investigation brings Dangle face-to-face with an evil gangster (Tanuj Virwani). At the same time, she is also forced to battle her personal demons.

Kamathipura, as one would expect, has all the dark elements one would expect from a piece of fiction based in the dark areas of Mumbai. This aspect is brought alive by the production design.

Chopra received appreciation for her part in the film Section 375 (2019).

The trailer also shows a fleeting glimpse of veteran artiste Kulbhushan Kharbanda.

The trailer tries to cram a lot into one and a half minutes and at times tries too hard to be thrilling.

Directed by Shravankumar Tiwari, Kamathipura will be streamed on Disney+ Hotstar from 8 March for free.

Check out the trailer and let us know if you are keen on watching the show.
