Netflix India on Thursday unveiled the trailer of the Malayalam film Irul, which will be premiered on the streaming platform on 2 April. The film, which stars Fahadh Faasil, Soubin Shahir and Darshana Rajendran, is a thriller about a serial killer who abhors women.

Directed by first-time helmer Naseef Yusuf Izuddin, the film features only three characters. Irul went on the floors during the pandemic last September. This will be Fahadh’s second direct-to-OTT release after C U Soon (2020)

The trailer introduces us to the lead characters and, going by the visuals, the entire film is believed to be shot in one location.

The trailer hints that one of the male leads plays a serial killer who has killed five women so far. The reason behind this could be his extreme hatred of women.

Naseef had previously worked on Hindi films such as Happy New Year (2014), Raees (2017), Newton (2017) and Tumbbad (2018)

The filmmaker told the Times of India newspaper that Malayalam cinema has the best content, comparatively speaking. "We just have to look at all the movies that have been coming out in the past 10 years. Also, the fan following for Malayalam films has greatly increased in Mumbai. Many Bollywood [Hindi cinema] filmmakers watch Malayalam cinema and talk about our actors. I was quite surprised at how people reacted when Irul was announced. A lot of people reached out and asked me, ‘Oh, you are working with these actors?’ Also, the Malayalam film industry welcomes newcomers from outside and gives them a chance. What happened with this film wouldn’t have happened in Mumbai.”

Irul has been produced by Anto Joseph.
