The trailer for Saumen Sur’s film Ei Ami Renu, set in the 1980s, presents glimpses of a complex romantic equation between the lead characters. Featuring Sohini Sarkar as the protagonist Renu, Soham Chakraborty as her husband, and Gaurav Chakrabarty as her love interest, Ei Ami Renu is based on Samaresh Majumdar’s eponymous novel.
The film also features Kaushik Ganguly, Alivia Sarkar and Anindya Chatterjee playing crucial characters.
The trailer begins with Ganguly singing a famous Tagore song that highlights the pain that accompanies love. We see two visuals of Renu getting married. One represents her deepest desire and shows her getting married happily to Gaurav's character; the other shows the reality of her being forced into an arranged marriage with Soham's character.
The visuals that follow clearly pose Soham's character as a suspicious husband who has employed Ganguly to look into his wife’s affairs. While the husband seems to often lose his cool with his wife, he also cannot stand it when the detective tells him about her promiscuity.
The film seems to be telling the story of a young woman in love with someone from her group of friends being forced into an arranged marriage for 'security'. However, unlike in most cases, Renu continues to feel passionately for her first love and also cannot help but feel apologetic for not being able to stay committed to her marriage.
Ganguly portrays an interesting character. Though at the end of the trailer he claims to be keeping the best interests of all in mind, one cannot help but think of him as a manipulative person. At the same time, he seems to be a man of wisdom who understands that love often does not follow social norms and chooses its own course. Some visuals suggest he may have his own tragic story.
The husband, on the other hand, comes across as a tormented character who begins to hurt the person he loves the most when he is hurt. Throughout the trailer, he seems to be looking for peace while Renu continues the search of her soul, simply listening to her heart.
The trailer has ample references to the 1980s, including the once ubiquitous Ambassador cars and the exchange of letters. Both leading men sport striking moustaches, an essential style statement of the period.
Ei Ami Renu is slated for release on 9 April. Watch the trailer below and let us know if you are keen to watch this film.
