The teaser of Umesh Bist’s Pagglait revealed that the film is about a young widow who fails to experience sorrow after the untimely death of her husband. The trailer of the film, which is just out, divulges more details.

Pagglait takes place in a North Indian town. Sandhya (Sanya Malhotra) loses her spouse Astik after just five months of marriage. However, she doesn't display any signs of grief and expresses a desire to enjoy life as if nothing has happened. Her near and dear ones such as her mother and a close friend are left wondering about her indifference.

A twist emerges when it is learnt through a lawyer (Sharib Hashmi) that Sandhya stands to receive Rs50 lakh thanks to an insurance policy.

It is quite a daring feat to make a film on such an unusual topic. The biggest challenge for the makers was to make the film genuinely funny while not seeming insensitive. It achieves this, at least in the trailer. The scenes where Sandhya’s mother-in-law (Sheeba Chaddha) and her friend realize how callous the young woman is, not only catch you off guard but also generate laughter.

Malhotra appears to be a good fit for the role. Ashutosh Rana and Sayani Gupta make blink-and-you-miss-it appearances, but they seem to play important characters.

Pagglait is Bist’s first feature film. He has made the crime series Kaun? Who Did It? (2021).

The film will be streamed on Netflix from 26 March.
