Tamil filmmaker SP Jananathan dies in hospital of cardiac arrest


Jananathan was rushed to the Apollo hospitals in Chennai three days ago after he was found unconscious at home and put on ventilator support.

National award-winning Tamil filmmaker SP Jananathan, who was hospitalized on Thursday after he was found unconscious in his home, died today. An official statement said he suffered a cardiac arrest.

On Thursday, Jananathan was busy with the editing work of his upcoming Tamil film, Laabam (2021), a political drama starring Vijay Sethupathi and Shruti Haasan. He left to go home for lunch but never returned even after a few hours. When his assistants went to house to check on him, the front door was open and the filmmaker was lying unconscious on the floor.

Jananathan was rushed to the Apollo hospitals in Chennai where he was diagnosed with blood clots in his brain. He was shifted to the intensive care unit and immediately put on ventilator support.

'Laabam director SP Jananathan, who was in a critical condition and undergoing treatment at the Apollo hospitals, passed away today after suffering a cardiac arrest,' read a statement released by the hospital.

Shruti Haasan took to Twitter to pay tribute to the director.

Jananathan made his debut as a filmmaker with Iyarkai (2003), which went on to win the National award. He was popular for making socially relevant films. Among his other films were E (2006) and Peraanmai (2009).

The upcoming Laabam was Jananathan's second film with Vijay Sethupathi, with whom he had worked on Purampoku Engira Podhuvudamai (2015) and was slated to be released in April.
